Proper scheduling of irrigation systems can also keep nutrients from lawn fertilizer from moving into our bays. Irrigation systems are designed to provide supplemental water when rainfall is not sufficient and should stop running before any runoff occurs.  If irrigation water is running down the road, it is likely carrying nutrients away from where the lawn can use them and toward our coastal waters. Many irrigation controllers now have features that prevent runoff and only allow the system to irrigate when the lawn and plantings truly need supplemental water.
